Upon her death, Lola’s wish was to be cremated and have a Catholic mass performed. Her service took place in Walnut Creek, just four miles from where she lived her final years, in a church designed by Aaron Green, student and eventual partner of Frank Lloyd Wright. With an eye for architecture, Lola would have appreciated the sanctuary’s airy layout.
On this bright and crisp morning, a host of relatives and family friends were in attendance, including Lola’s 95-year old sister-in-law Maxima, as well as her sister Fe and cousin Vicky, both 91 years of age.
Three of Lola’s four children — Hilda, Bonnie, and Johnny — were present. This occasion also brought together all five of Lola’s grandchildren — Andrés, Gus, Tihani, Aimy, and Kevin, ages 11 to 44 — for the very first time. Each played a role in the service, and several offered passages and prayers.
